Concerning Oaths

Matthew 5:33-37 Douay-Rheims

33 Again you have heard that it was said to them of old, Thou shalt not forswear thyself: but thou shalt perform thy oaths to the Lord.

34 But I say to you not to swear at all, neither by heaven, for it is the throne of God:

35 Nor by the earth, for it is his footstool: nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great king:

36 Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black.

37 But let your speech be yea, yea: no, no: and that which is over and above these, is of evil.

Concerning Oaths

Fatima Morning Offering

Every morning since receiving my Brown Scapular I have tried my best to pray this simple prayer before I do anything else.

O my God, in union with the Immaculate Heart of Mary (here kiss your Brown Scapular *) I offer Thee the Most Precious Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Our Lord, Jesus Christ, joining with it my every thought, word and action of this day.

O my Jesus, I desire today to gain every indulgence and merit I can and I offer them, together with myself, to Mary Immaculate, that she may best apply them to the interests of Thy most Sacred Heart.

Precious Blood of Jesus, Save us!
Immaculate Heart of Mary, Pray for us!
Sacred Heart of Jesus, Have mercy on us!

Amen.

* Kissing the Brown Scapular with Reverence grants an indulgence of 500 days which is applied to the souls in purgatory.

The Scapular devotion was born on July 16, 1251 when Our Blessed Mother appeared to St. Simon Stock, general of the Carmelite Order, in response to his heartfelt prayers for assistance. Holding the Scapular before him, Our Lady spoke, saying:

“Take this Scapular. Whosoever dies wearing it shall not suffer eternal fire. It shall be a sign of salvation, a protection in danger and pledge of peace.”

At Fatima, the Mother of God emphasized the vital importance of the daily recitation of the Rosary and signaled Her desire that all Catholics wear the Brown Scapular as a visible sign of their devotion.
